This inner city Melbourne parish was established in 1887, when the Augustinian, James A Goold was Archbishop of Melbourne. It was a diocesan parish until early 1976 when it was given into the care of the Augustinians. There are two Churches in the parish, the main one being St Joseph's and there is a chapel-of-ease St Thomas Aquinas, an attractive little church with a Spanish style facade. The parish also has the pastoral care of the Alfred Hospital, a major Melbourne public hospital. Like most inner-city parishes South Yarra has only a small percentage of the Catholic population attending Mass but the multicultural community which does attend Mass is alive, prayerful and welcoming. The parish is in touch with a large number of people in the area through its care for the elderly, an emergency shelter for the homeless, and food store. St Joseph’s South Yarra Emergency Housing Association Inc. was formed in 1998 and converted several empty classrooms into four self-contained transitional housing units for families awaiting public housing. The current project of the Association is converting more unused old school classrooms into units for homeless families making up an emergency housing complex. An active Parish Pastoral Council has been in existence for 30 years. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults has enabled adults to be prepared for baptism for the past twenty-four years. The Augustinians currently serving in South Yarra are Fr Brian Buckley OSA (Parish Priest), Fr John Barry O.S.A.and Fr Gerald Dullard O.S.A.. Sunday Mass times:
