  • Membership drive in the various parishes during August. Last year with the support and enthusiasm of the priests and members this proved to be most successful.
  • Looking ahead to the AFA Christmas function. Once again this will be held at the Warringah Golf Club and the new date is Saturday 23rd November 2002.

Fr Peter Jones osa in his report makes mention of a number of recently deceased members of the Association. Many of these people have been long time members. Some bore suffering in the later years and months of their lives, not to mention the grief in the hearts of those family and close friends left behind.

The question why? is often posed when we behold our friends and loved ones in the difficult days of hardship. It has been said that Jesus has a special love for such people. It can also be that there is much strength to be gained from being in the company of those suffering. Such people can be an inspiration to others in that no matter what hardship we believe we are undergoing there is always someone bearing a greater difficulty; such an observation can assist one to bear the difficulty. The ultimate suffering was Jesus on the Cross, which becomes a major inspiration for us to cope with our difficulties.
Michael Halloway, President

On 29 June, Minh-Tan Hoang (Tan) was received into the novitiate. The ceremony marked the formal beginning of a year in which Tan will reflectively learn more about Augustinian religious life. It is a period of preparation of first profession of religious vows upon the completion of the novitiate. Duy Pham (Joseph) who is in the pre-novitiate programme will complete his tertiary education preparation studies at TAFE. Tan and Joseph are part of the Augustinian community at Brookvale. I ask members of AFA to continue to remember Tan and Joseph in your prayers.

Currently, four Korean Augustinian professed (Kim Dae Ho Thomas Aquinas, Kim Bok Chon Johann, Jeong Jin Young Linus Lino and Kim Hyun Won Paolo) are in Australia for six weeks. They are here to develop their study of English and to have some experience of Augustinian life and ministry in Australia During their time here they will visit most Augustinian places in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria. We welcome them among us.

For Sydney readers, a cultural evening in which people can meet our Korean Augustinian brothers and our own Provinces two candidates, Tan and Joseph will take place at St Kierans Parish Centre on Friday 19 July at 7.30 pm. All are welcome.

In late July, the Augustinians in Australia will meet in Chapter in Brisbane. A significant aspect of this Chapter will be the presence and involvement of representatives of lay friends and supporters of the Augustinians. Michael Halloway, President of AFA will be attending.

For anyone in Brisbane on Tuesday 30 July there will be a Mass of celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Australasian Province of the Augustinians at 7 pm at St James Church, Coorparoo. All friends and supporters of the Order are welcome. Refreshments will follow in the parish hall.

Prayers are requested for the following members who are not enjoying good health:

Dorothy Brennan
Baden Keating
Joan Keating
Fr Dave Brimson osa
Fr Tom Mescall osa

Any other members of AFA requesting prayers please write to: Fr Peter Jones osa
Finally I acknowledge with sadness the deaths of the following since our last newsletter: Fr Maurice OConnor osa, John Kelly, Mary OConnell, Terry Kelly, and Jack Pike. John, Mary, Terry and Jack were members of AFA. The Association has arranged for a Mass to be celebrated for each of them. Fr Maurice was a great supporter of the Association, consistently attending the various social functions. If my memory serves me correctly, at one of the last Christmas functions he attended, he cleaned up a fair proportion of the tombola prizes! From Ireland we have received news of the recent deaths of Fr Daniel Ormonde osa (in Australia 1945-1956) and Fr James Kavanagh osa (in Australia 1948-1988).

May each of those named above and all our deceased rest in peace

Fr Peter Jones OSA
