AUGUSTINIAN BULLETIN BOARD - June 2000

Sing to the Lord a new song

You ask what you should sing about the one you love? For of course you do want to sing about the one you love. You are asking for praises of his to sing. You have been told, Sing to the Lord a new song. You are looking for praise songs, are you? His praise is in the Church of the saints. The praise of the one to be sung about is the singer himself. Do you want to sing God his praises? Be yourselves what you sing. You are his praise if you lead good lives.

Sermon 34, 6

  • Echuca parish recently celebrated 125 years (20-21 May) since its foundation. The parish not only celebrated its great heritage but also celebrated the many good things that are happening in the parish community today. On the Saturday night an evening of entertainment and socialising in the parish took place. The main focus of the weekend was the celebration of the Eucharist presided by Fr John Murray osa (Pastor). A B.B.Q. followed. A great weekend in which the many gifts of the Echuca parish community were evident.

  • Walk for Reconciliation across the Harbour Bridge - Over sixty parishioners from Holy Spirit Parish, St Clair, were joined by Fathers Laurie Mooney osa and Paul Maloney osa for the walk on the last Sunday in May. Walking under the parish banner most parishioners caught the train together for the near sixty kilometre journey to the northern side of the bridge. A smaller number of the group continued to St Mary's Cathedral for the ecumenical service which concluded the weekend of Corroboree 2000.

It is difficult to estimate crowd size! Father Peter Wieneke osa had his own method. Peter was at the record-breaking Bledisloe Cup at Stadium Australia in 1999 at which there were more than 100,000 spectators. "There were way more than two full Stadium Australia in the Walk", said Peter.

Also participating in the Walk for Reconciliation were a group of students, teachers and families from St Augustine's College, Brookvale and parishioners from St Kieran's Parish, Manly Vale.

  • St Kieran's Parish Manly Vale begin this month with a parish renewal programme called "Sharing the Flame" The preparation and delivery of the programme is a collaborative effort between parishioners and the Augustinian Spirituality Team from Greystanes.

The Spirituality Team from Greystanes has been very busy in serving Augustinian ministries recently. During May they conducted parish renewal programmes in the Order's two Brisbane parishes of Coorparoo and Goodna. At the end of May they hosted a weekend retreat for the Lecceto (Augustinian Lay) Community.

  • Father Peter McHugh osa is recovering after treatment for a heart attack suffered last month. The prayers of the Augustinians and friends of the Order are with Fr Peter at this time.
In early July, Augustinians and friends of the Order say farewell to Fr John O'Sullivan osa who leaves Australia to return to his native Ireland after serving here for 27 years. During his time in Australia John has ministered in parishes in Coorparoo, Redland Bay, Innisfail, Manly Vale, some relief work in St Clair and finally Kyabram. We thank John for all that he has given to so many while in Australia and we wish him well for his return to Ireland.

  • Jubilee Celebrations at Mareeba. Sunday June 18 will see St Thomas's Parish Mareeba celebrate Jubilee 2000 with an outdoor Mass at 10.00am followed by a community gathering. The Mass will be concelebrated by the three Augustinians priests of the parish and attended by many parishioners. Special Jubilee hymns will be sung, highlighted by a reflection of massed voices after communion. During the day an olive tree, the symbol of peace, communion and hope for the future will be planted by parishioners. This will be followed by a shared meal and games for all who wish to participate. Everyone in the parish is both invited and urged to come. Shalom!

  • Pentecost Sunday Jubilee Celebration - Sunday 11 June 2000 at St James' Catholic Church 165 Old Cleveland Rd Coorparoo Qld. An invitation to share in celebrating the Holy Spirit amongst us and our call to Jubilee by sharing 9.00 am Mass followed by a cooked breakfast.

  • Please pray for the Augustinians as we prepare for our mid-Chapter to be held in Brisbane 2 - 7 July.

  • "Life with Augustine"...a course in his spirit and guidance for daily living. This excellent programme compiled by Edmond Maher is a self study adult education programme which provides a means by which participants can come to know more about Augustine, the times in which he lived, the Scriptures that taught him, the life inspired by him and its relevance to us today.
