AUGUSTINIAN BULLETIN BOARD - July 2001

The moneylender

Nobody should be afraid of spending money on the poor. Nobody should imagine that the one who receives it is the one whose outstretched hand he sees. The one who receives it is the one who ordered you to give it. And this isn't just my own idea, I'm not saying it as a piece of merely human guesswork; listen to him, as he both gives you warning and writes you out a guarantee. I was hungry, he says, and you gave me to eat. And when, after he has mentioned several other forms of kindness, they answer, When did we see you hungry? he in turn replies, When you did it to one of the least of mine, you did it to me.

Sermon 86, 3

Congratulations to Fr Ron Bopf who celebrates 50th anniversary of religious profession (12 July) and to Frs Peter McHugh and Tom Mescall who celebrate their 40th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood (16 July)

Mr John Stephenson of Sydney who was an affiliate of the Order died on 25 June. The friendship of John and his wife Pat with the Augustinians goes back almost 50 years when the Stephensons were among those who welcomed the Augustinians to Manly Vale (1952). They were among the first group of parents whose sons attended St Augustine's College, Brookvale and were great pioneer supporters of the school. John was part of a group who established an association of friends of the Augustinians who would raise funds to support the education of candidates for the Order. For many years John was the president of the Augustinian Student Guild (later the Augustinian Seminary Guild and today the Augustinian Formation Association).

The Order extends sympathy to Pat (also an affiliate) and the other members of the family. May he rest in God's peace.

Prayers are requested for the success of the Augustinian Youth Festival taking place at Harrietville, Victoria 5-8 July.

Mr Ray Ninnes has been appointed Chair of the Villanova College Council. The Provincial congratulates Ray on his appointment. The Provincial also thanks Mr Michael O'Neill whose services as Chair of the Council for the past 2 years has been of great benefit to the College.July 2001
