AUGUSTINIAN BULLETIN BOARD - August 2001

You are my joy and my crown

God grants well-being or salvation in the present to both human beings and animals, to both good and bad alike; and it was this temporal well-being that the martyrs scorned for the sake of eternal salvation. You undoubtedly rejoice at my well-being, because you can see me in good health; and I rejoice at your well-being in Christ. But make it your business to see to it that I can rejoice with you on that day, because what the apostle said about his stewardship, which was so great and wise that we can scarcely follow in his footsteps, he said to us, whom he was building up in the faith; and he said, You are my joy and my crown. So as many of you as are making progress in Christ as a result of my labors, are my joy and my crown; because my duty is faithfully to lay out, not mine, but the Lord's capital; yours is to receive and use it responsibly with great care. I, you see, can be a giver, not a collector; and a giver, not of my goods, so to say, but of God's, which I live on too, because we all belong to one great household, we are all under one head of the family. He has an ample storeroom, from which both we and you are able to live. Let us only beg him to rid us of all fastidiousness; first to make us hungry, and then to offer us bread. What I live on is what I utter to you; what I'm fed on is what I serve up to you. Because with you I am a poor man; the wealth we share in common is our Lord, the life of us all which is blessed and eternal. So, whoever boasts, let him boast in the Lord.

Sermon 319A

The recent youth festival at Harrietville, Victoria was a great success.

National Vocations Awareness Week (5-12 August). During this week the church in Australia reflects on the various ways in which the vocation to follow Christ is lived. We include here a prayer for vocations to Augustinian religious life: Lord Jesus, Christ, following your command the early Christians lived one in mind and heart, journeying together towards God. Enlighten men and women and give them strength of will that they may answer your call to live in one mind and heart, following you in the Order of Saint Augustine, and faithfully persevering in its Rule for the remainder of their lives. Amen.

Congratulations to Yeong J Y Linus and Kim H W Paolo of the Korean Region who recently professed their first vows as Augustinians. We continue to be thankful for the growth of Augustinian life in Korea.

St James's Parish Coorparoo - On 8 July, our Parish Administrator, Fr Brendan Quirke, was farewelled at dinner by the Parish Pastoral Council. Fr Brendan has taken leave and, after a brief stopover in New York State, has headed to his family in Ireland. We look forward to welcoming him back on his return and trust that this refreshment will allow him to approach his task of leading the parish with a new-found vigour.

On three Tuesdays in August 2001, the Parish Council is offering a "Getting to Know Augustine" course for parishioners. Two sessions will be held on each of these days, mornings sessions led by Vince O'Rourke and evening sessions by Mike Slack. The course is entitled "The Confessions of Augustine - An Introductory Reading" and will give parishioners the opportunity to read and discuss key sections on The Confessions. The parish's Liturgy Group is formulating a special Para-Liturgy for the evening of the Feast of St Augustine. This will be the fourth Tuesday of the month and will flow naturally from the sessions of the other three Tuesdays. Following this, refreshments will be taken in the priory.
