AUGUSTINIAN BULLETIN BOARD - September 2001

You reach God by humility
In ordinary visible situations, in order to reach places high up, you stretch yourself up to your full height. God however, though he is the most sublimely high up of all things, is not reached by hoisting oneself up, but by humbling oneself. Which is why the prophet says, The Lord is near to those who have crushed their hearts; and again: The Lord is most high, and looks to the humble things, and the high things he knows for afar. "High things" mean the proud. So he looks to those other things, to raise them up; these things he knows, to cast them down. After all, when he said that he knows the high things from afar, he showed clearly enough that he attends to the humble things from close by; and yet he had first said that the Lord himself is most high. God alone, you see, cannot be regarded as arrogant, with whatever fanfares he may be pleased to praise himself.
