AUGUSTINIAN BULLETIN BOARD - July 2002

Love the Whole Christ

Extend your love over the whole earth if you desire to love Christ, for Christ's members are all over the earth. If you love but a part, you are divided. If you are divided, you are not in the Body. If you are not in the Body, you are not under the Head

St Augustine. Confessions 10,36.

· The Augustinians will gather for their Provincial Chapter in Brisbane (Riverglenn Conference Centre Indooroopilly) from 28 July to 2 August. The Chapter is a major spiritual event in the life of the Augustinian Province in Australia when the overall programme for the next four years is discussed, discerned and decided upon.

For the first time in the history of the Province, lay representatives will attend some part of the Chapter to contribute to the Order's reflection. The Chapter will also be an occasion to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Augustinians in Australia becoming a full Province of the Order. A public Mass to mark this celebration will take place at St James Church, Coorparoo on Tuesday, 30 July at 7pm. You are most welcome to attend this celebration.

· On 29 April in Dublin, Daniel Ormonde osa died. Daniel was born in Villierstown, County Waterford, Ireland in 1915. In 1934 he made his first profession of religious vows as an Augustinian and was ordained a priest in 1939. In 1945 he was appointed to Australia. While here he served in Cairns, Innisfail, Gordonvale before being appointed the first parish priest of the new parish at St Kieran's, Manly Vale in 1952. His part in the building up of the new parish which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary will remain an important aspect of Fr Ormonde's legacy in Australia. In 1956 he retuned to Ireland and at various times in the years ahead he served in Ireland, England and Rome. May he rest in peace.

· On 19 May 2002 during the 10 am Mass in St Peter's Square, Rome, Fr Alonso de Orozco osa was canonised by the Pope.

Fr Olonso was born on 17 October 1500 and died 19 September 1591. In 1554, when Prior of Valladolid, city of the royal court, he was appointed 'royal preacher' to emperor Charles V, and moved to Madrid with the court in 1561.

He lived a very austere and prayerful life, even while resident at the royal court. His most attractive quality was that he was at ease with people of all social classes, and they with him. He had time for everybody. He remained devoted to the Augustinian Order, endeavouring by his writings about its history and spirituality, to attract good men to its way of life. He desired to bring about internal reform, and to that end founded monasteries of men and of women, which would lead soon to the movement of recollection in the Order.
He was beatified by Pope Leo XIII on 15 January 1882.

On behalf of the Australian Province, Fr Tony Banks osa was present at the recent canonisation.

· Listening to the Land and its People - a public forum on "Listening to the Land and its People" will be held at 7.30 pm on 18th July at St Andrew's, Montmorency, Melbourne. Fr Rod Cameron osa has been asked to join the panel of four speakers.

Last year, when Alastair Pritchard, a pastor of the Uniting Church at Montmorency, was visiting North Queensland, he was keen on meeting Aboriginal people and Fr Rod introduced him to a number of his Aboriginal friends. This led to Fr Rod's participation in the coming event at Montmorency.
