AUGUSTINIAN BULLETIN BOARD - October 2002 Christian Hope As long as we are in this world, if we take care to have our hearts lifted up above, the fact that we are walking here below won't be to our disadvantage. We are walking here below, after all, in this flesh. So by fixing our hope up above, we have set it like an anchor on firm ground, able to hold out against any of the stormy waves of this world, not by our own strength but by that of the one in whom this anchor of our hope has been fixed. Having caused us to hope, after all, he will not disappoint us, but will in due course give us the reality in exchange for the hope. For hope, as the apostle says, which is seen is not hope; for why should anyone hope for what he can see? But if, he goes on, we hope for what we cannot see, we wait for it with patience. Sermon 359A, 1 In last month's bulletin board there was a brief report on the Provincial
Chapter (28 July to 2 August). At the Chapter a new Provincial Council
was elected to assist Fr Pat Fahey osa, Provincial in his leadership.
The members of the newly elected Council are:- In late September Fr Pat Fahey (Provincial) accompanied by Fr Anthony Banks attended the triennial meeting of APAC (Asia-Pacific Augustinian Conference) in the Philippines. This conference works on areas of common interest to men and women Augustinian religious in the Asia Pacific region. While in the Philippines the various superiors of the regions of the Augustinian Order in the Asia-Pacific will also meet with the Order's Assistant General for the region, Fr Eusebio Berdon osa. Welcome to Australia - Sr Gavina Barrera and Sr Josefa Mabini of the Consolation Sisters from the Philippines. A Convent for the Consolation Sisters will be built at Brookvale. Sr Gavina will be a pastoral worker at St Augustine's College, Brookvale and Sr Josefa will serve as a pastoral associate at St Kieran's, Manly Vale.
This October will be an important milestone in the history of St Kieran's at Manly Vale and will see a busy month of activity. The key weekend will be that of the 12th/13th October. This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of the first Mass being said in the Parish and will also see the official opening of the latest building in the school complex. The Parish was originally part of the Manly Parish and was proclaimed in 1952. The original Church was opened in 1952 and the first Mass was said on 12th October 1952 by Father John Walsh who at that time was assistant priest to Monsignor McDonald of Manly. As with many parishes in those days the first building doubled as a Church and School building and still exists as the lower story of the older school building adjacent to the current Parish hall. The Archbishop of the Diocese of Broken Bay, Bishop David Walker, will be presiding on Sunday 13th October to celebrate the 9.30am Mass and then officially open the newest School building and rededicate key areas of the other buildings on the Church/School complex which now stretches along Condamine Street, Manly Vale between Gordon and King Streets. Celebrations will follow with a morning tea in the Parish hall. The following weekend (19th/20th October) will see further celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the Augustinian Order in the Parish. Father Daniel Ormonde O.S.A, the first Parish priest, celebrated his first Parish Mass in the new church school on 19th October 1952. To mark this occasion there will be a brunch held in the Parish hall after the 9.30am Mass on Sunday 20th October. Bishop David Walker will be returning to the Parish for three days on 25th/26th/27th October for a Pastoral visitation. He is hoping to meet as many parishioners as possible and as well as celebrating a number of Masses will be visiting both St Kieran's Primary School and St Augustine's College at Brookvale. On 24th November there will be further celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the first Mass said in the Brookvale area to cater for residents who lived in the northern extremities of the new St Kieran's Parish. Until the church was built in 1955 on the site of the current St Augustine's College site in Alfred Rd, Brookvale Mass was said across the road in the old pavilion at Brookvale Oval.
This annual celebration will be held on Sunday 20 October at 10.00am in St Thomas's. We are honoured this year to have Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann as our special guest, along with the Pamagirri Dancers from Kuranda and the AICC singers from Cairns.
