AUGUSTINIAN BULLETIN BOARD - November 2002

The raising of the dead

The Lord himself says, For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so too the Son gives life to whom he will. Not, of course, that the Son gives life to some, the Father to others; but the Father and the Son give it to the same people, because the Father does everything through the Son.

So no one who is a Christian should doubt that even today the dead are raised.

Sermon 98, 1

Augnet

A web site of particular Augustinian interest was launched in Sydney on 6th August 2002. It is http://www.augnet.org
Augnet is intended to encourage greater links between Augustinian schools via the Internet and by other means, and to enable them to understand and share further their common Augustinian spirituality and heritage. St Augustine's College, Brookvale, N.S.W., Australia and Austin Friars School, Carlisle, England were the originating participants, and Villanova Preparatory School, Ojai, California, U.S.A. is presently in the process of joining Augnet. The first co-operative initiative by Augnet was an international photographic and poster competition, which attracted entries from four Augustinian schools on three different continents. Site statistics indicate that Augnet has attracted most usage from Australia and the United Kingdom (where the Augustinian schools are making use of it in class). Other Augnet browsers are recorded as living in thirty-eight other nations, from Argentina to Austria, Brazil to Belize, Chile to China, Estonia to Egypt, Iceland to Ireland, etc. The site was intentionally launched in an incomplete state, as it is intended that staff and student involvement will increasing come into play to expand and perfect it. Such an expectation was not in vain, as the first examples of staff and student contributions have already happened. For Augnet's initial phase, the webmaster is Fr Michael Endicott O.S.A. in Brisbane. He can be contacted at webmaster@augnet.org

The Hon. Tony Abbott MHR, Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations in the Australian Federal Parliament, is seen here launching Augnet on to the Internet.

St Augustine's College, Springfield

The Archdiocese of Brisbane in Queensland has begun the construction of fourteen school buildings on a twelve-hectare (25 acre) site in Springfield, a ten-year-old development that will eventually be a city of 55,000 people on the boundary of the present cities of Brisbane and Ipswich in southeastern Queensland.

This new school site was dedicated and blessed on 13th September 2002 in a ceremony that involved two local Augustinians. As the priest-in-charge of ministry in Springfield, Fr Michael Endicott O.S.A. said the prayer of blessing. Father Michael Morahan O.S.A. presented his book on Augustinian education to Erin Wedge. Erin has been appointed Assistant Principal (Religious Education) of this new co-educational P-12 college, which will first open its doors to students on 29th January 2003.

Prompted by the presence and interest of these Augustinians who live nearby at St Augustine's Priory, Camira, the Archbishop has given the new school the name of St Augustine's College, and asked that the Augustinians assist it to adopt an Augustinian spirituality.

The temporary office of St Augustine's College, Springfield can be contacted at psspringfield@bne.catholic.edu.au

St Kieran's, Manly Vale - 50th Anniversary

This October will be an important milestone in the history of St Kieran's at Manly Vale and will see a busy month of activity.

The key weekend will be that of the 12th/13th October. This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of the first Mass being said in the Parish and will also see the official opening of the latest building in the school complex.

The Parish was originally part of the Manly Parish and was proclaimed in 1952. The original Church was opened in 1952 and the first Mass was said on 12th October 1952 by Father John Walsh who at that time was assistant priest to Monsignor McDonald of Manly. As with many parishes in those days the first building doubled as a Church and School building and still exists as the lower story of the older school building adjacent to the current Parish hall. The Archbishop of the Diocese of Broken Bay, Bishop David Walker, will be presiding on Sunday 13th October to celebrate the 9.30am Mass and then officially open the newest School building and rededicate key areas of the other buildings on the Church/School complex which now stretches along Condamine Street, Manly Vale between Gordon and King Streets. Celebrations will follow with a morning tea in the Parish hall.

The following weekend (19th/20th October) will see further celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the Augustinian Order in the Parish. Father Daniel Ormonde O.S.A, the first Parish priest, celebrated his first Parish Mass in the new church school on 19th October 1952. To mark this occasion there will be a brunch held in the Parish hall after the 9.30am Mass on Sunday 20th October.

Bishop David Walker will be returning to the Parish for three days on 25th/26th/27th October for a Pastoral visitation. He is hoping to meet as many parishioners as possible and as well as celebrating a number of Masses will be visiting both St Kieran's Primary School and St Augustine's College at Brookvale.

On 24th November there will be further celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the first Mass said in the Brookvale area to cater for residents who lived in the northern extremities of the new St Kieran's Parish. Until the church was built in 1955 on the site of the current St Augustine's College site in Alfred Rd, Brookvale Mass was said across the road in the old pavilion at Brookvale Oval.

RCIA TeamMareeba News

This year the Adult catechumenate in St Thomass parish has five adults and St Anthonys parish in Dimbulah one, who started the RCIA process at the beginning of September. These six, Eleanor Gatto, Rebecca Haynes, Vicki Henderson, Elizabeth James, Laurie Toppin and Joanna West, along with their sponsors, and the RCIA team have been meeting each Monday. On Sunday 13 October they were received into the catechumenate proper during the Rite of Welcome. Eleanor attended the Rite at the 8.00am Mass at St Anthonys and the other five at the 10.00am Mass at St Thomass. Fr Robert Greenup OSA was presider at both Masses.

This years annual International Celebration will be held at St Thomass Church on Saturday 23 November. The night will begin with the 6pm Mass which will draw on the theme of the Year of the Outback and will include various cultures represented in our parish. Afterwards, there will be a shared meal of a variety of ethnic foods, followed by entertainment. Everyone is most welcome to attend and is asked to wear their national dress, if possible, and bring a plate of food typical of your culture to share.

Discover an Augustinian approach to prayer . . .

St. Augustine is a most helpful teacher of prayer for our modern-day mentality. Many people find his way of prayer to be most practical for them. These three days at the Augustinian Centre offer a cumulative experience of Augustine 's way of praying or you can choose an individual day that speaks to your present needs.

9:45 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Cost $15:00 per day (concession available)

St. Augustine 's First Movement of Prayer

THE ART OF OBSERVING:
This prayer movement is outward to greet the world in all its wonder. As children we observe all of reality this way. Somehow as we get older, we find ourselves lost in the daily grind of work and responsibility. We discover that we 've lost our sense of childlike curiosity over life 's daily delightfulness.

In the afternoon session we open ourselves to experiencing God in friendship and hospitality for others.

Tuesday October 29th. 2002
St. Augustine 's Second Movement of Prayer

THE ART OF CONVERSING:
This movement suggests going within oneself to discover Christ as the teacher of the heart. Here he reveals to us what it is that God wants us to know at a particular moment.

In the afternoon session we discover how lovingly the Living Word is made flesh (incarnated) in our hearts.

Tuesday November 19th. 2002
St. Augustine 's Third Movement of Prayer

THE ART OF CONTEMPLATING: This movement allows Christ to draw us more deeply within the Trinitarian Community of Love. Here we sense the wonder of a deep and gifted relationship with our God.

In the afternoon session we forget our cares and the vibrations of a busy life, make friends with an inner silence and renew ourselves.
