"THE AUGUSTINIAN" April 2001

After meeting with quite a few of the locals (Salesian Provincial, Divine Word Provincial, Diocesan Econome, Jesuit Superior at Taibessi, Canossian Sisters, Publications Director, and, finally, the remarkable Fr Domingos Soares - probably the most beloved priest in East Timor), it is becoming clear that the greatest need is that of deepening the faith of the people by preaching the word and catechizing. At the moment, there are simply not enough priests, religious or educated laity to do this work. Up in the mountains, Domingos has 30,000 people in his parish, and six Churches. He is their only priest. The next parish to him has 50,000 people and only one priest. A third diocese is to be created in the south of the island before the end of the year. It is said that the new bishop will be even worse off for personnel than the dioceses of Dili and Baucau.

Much thought needs to be given to our response to the bishop. Whatever happens, we need to discern deeply before embarking on this challenging venture. Please keep this intention in your prayer.
