AFAS-Australian Filipino Augustinian Solidarity

In September each year the AFAS scholarship accounts fall due. Thanks to the generosity of the Villanova College community cheques have been given to the Augustinian Sisters at Divine Love High School to fund five education scholarships for Carene, Analyn, Marical and Ritchel. Marjoe, a student at San Agustin College in Bacolod also received her scholarship to continue her studies to become a secondary teacher. In Murcia the Augustinian Sisters expressed thanks on behalf of Glen and Mary Ann for AFAS's continued support for them.

Other projects which also received further assistance from AFAS are the pre-schools attached to Augustinian outreach centres in Iloilo and Bacolod for the purchase of further resources. Co-operative ventures such as market gardening and the marketing of fish, which assist poor people to improve their lives, also received funding from AFAS. These ventures are co-ordinated by the respective Augustinian communities in Bacolod and Danou.

IRISH PROVINCE NEWS

The days of sending missionaries abroad have ended. Many of the missionaries have returned home. Emigration is no longer the norm in Ireland. Many emigrants are returning. Refugees, asylum seekers and foreign workers are coming here and Ireland is becoming a multicultural society-a whole new experience for the locals. Returnees from the missions have much to offer in promoting understanding between the races. Candidates for religious life and priesthood are scarce, and the few who come along will be needed to work on the home-mission. There are new challenges for the Irish Augustinians, and I'm sure they will not be found wanting in meeting them.
