ACTION PLUS LEADERSHIP TRAINING CAMP - GENAZZANO CENTRE Lake Tinaroo

January found 42 young people aged 14 to 19 years heading to the Genazzano Centre on Lake Tinaroo to take part in a six day Youth Leadership Camp known as Action Plus.

MusicThis was a "first" for the Far North and was an initiative of Mareeba Parish with the parish youth co-ordinator, Wendy van den Brink, coming up with the idea and organizing the whole event, assisted throughout by a few dedicated parishioners.

The professional facilitators, Greg Smith and Michael Kelly, skillfully conducted a great variety of talks, activities and games which were aimed at challenging the participants to reflect on the experience.

In the evenings various workshops were run by local volunteers who generously gave up their time to share their talents. These workshops included yoga, aromatherapy, creative drama, rhythm and song. New friendships were formed and reunions arranged. Written comments from the participants indicated their enthusiastic support.

Following in family footsteps (from the Catholic Leader 2001)

Unbroken linkWhen Russell Lea enrolled as a student at the newly opened Villanova College, Coorparoo in 1954, little did he think that 48 years later, his grandson would be walking the same corridors.

As an honorary foundation student, Russell was joined by son John and grandson Daniel at the Villanova College assembly in Goold Hall on the first day of school this year.

Daniel Lea, who started Year 5 this year, was acknowledged as the college's first third-generation student in an unbroken family line.

Russell graduated in 1960 and his son John graduated in 1983.
