Springfield's St Augustine's Catholic College
wins state government approval
The Queensland Government today granted approval to the construction
of St Augustine's Catholic College at Springfield in Brisbane's southwest.
Queensland Minister for Education Anna Bligh announced this afternoon
that the State Planning Assessment Committee had formally endorsed the
construction of St Augustine's Catholic College.
The formal approval means St Augustine's will officially open in 2003.
The school will host an initial intake of years one to three and year
eight with the facility ultimately offering a Catholic education from
pre-school to year 12 on the same campus.
St Augustine's Catholic College has been in the planning for several
years. The planning committee was awaiting state government approval
before proceeding with a start to construction next year.
"St Augustine's will give the people of Springfield and surrounds
the variety of educational choice," said St Augustine's planning
committee's Father Michael Endicott.
"Springfield is an area that is really starting to blossom and
already there are very strong traditions within the community. It is
also an area where values can be assessed across the local community."
St Augustine's will endeavour to offer a specific emphasis on the environment
with the added support of the local aboriginal community and its predecessors.
St Augustine's was one of two Catholic schools to win state government
approval. Xavier Catholic College at Hervey Bay on Queensland's Fraser
Coast will also open in 2003.
David Hutton, Executive Director of Brisbane Catholic Education, praised
the efforts of the two dedicated steering committees as well as the
local community support for both of the projects.
"The vision and spirit of all those people who have been involved
for a long period and the support at a Brisbane Catholic Education level
has been the springboard to this approval," Mr Hutton said.
"Both schools will be dynamic but different in their approach.
They will cater to the individual needs of their own communities.
"It's also important we give people throughout the Archdiocese
of Brisbane a choice of education. These two schools will now provide
that for the communities of Hervey Bay and Springfield."
Xavier Catholic College and St Augustine's Catholic College are two
of several Catholic schools being planned by Brisbane Catholic Education
in the next decade.
It is hoped schools will soon be built at Noosa on the Sunshine Coast
and in Algester in Brisbane's southwest.
