AUGUSTINIAN BULLETIN BOARD - July 2003 We know by faith Set your feet firmly on the way, set them there, so that you don't leave the way, not so that you stick on the way, but as it is written, So run, that you may attain. Let Christ flourish always in your hearts, the Christ who wished to show in the head what the other members should hope for. We indeed are toiling away on earth; our head in heaven now neither dies, nor fails in any way, nor suffers anything at all. He did, all the same, suffer for us, because he was handed over on account of our sins, and rose again on account of our justification. We know this by faith, while those he showed himself to learned it by their eyes. That doesn't mean, though, that we are rejected, because he rose again and we haven't been able to see him with our bodily eyes. We have the Lord's own testimony on our behalf ------ what he said to the doubting disciple, who sought to believe by touching. I mean, when he cried out, convinced by feeling the scars, and said, My Lord and my God, the Lord countered, Because you have seen me, he said, you have also believed; blessed are those who do not see, and yet believe. So wake up, all of you, to what is your real blessedness, don't let any evil persuader shake out of your hearts what Christ has fixed in them Sermon 361, 13
Phillip Patrick Kehoe osa
Phillip Kehoe was born on 24th February 1918 in Old Ross, County Wexford, Ireland. He came from a farming family of ten children. Four of his sisters also joined religious life. After entering the Augustinian novitiate, Phillip professed his first religious vows on 25th September 1939. He then undertook philosophical and theological studies in Dublin being ordained a priest on 17th March 1945. He was appointed to Limerick. In 1948 Fr Kehoe was sent to Australia where he would live and serve for the rest of his life. His first Australian appointment was to Echuca. He had a brief period of service in Mareeba, North Queensland (1952) and for the next sixteen years spent significant periods of time in Echuca and Kyabram both in northern Victoria. Fr Kehoe had a beautiful tenor voice and in his early years in Australia made some recordings of Irish songs. In1968 he was appointed as Chaplain of the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane. He lived in the Augustinian community at St James', Coorparoo also assisting in the parish. His ministry to those suffering illness and their families was invaluable and he remained faithfully committed to it for almost 30 years. Eventually his own health difficulties meant initially a reduction of his duties then retirement from the hospital. In recent years he lived at Villanova Priory, Coorparoo, where his great kindness and fidelity in community life meant a lot to his brother Augustinians. Following a request from the Provincial in 2001, Fr Kehoe kept as an intention in prayer Minh-Tan Hoang (Tan) who was considering a vocation to the Order. When Tan joined the Order last year, Fr Kehoe continued to remember him in prayer. The news of Tan's profession appears below. The Augustinians in Australia while acknowledging their own sadness at Fr Kehoe's passing, extend sympathy to his family in Ireland and his friends.
In one of the biggest projects it has ever undertaken, St Augustine's College is now bringing to completion a new multi-purpose hall on the northern boundary of the college property. To be known as the Brimson Centre in honour of the founding Rector (Principal) of the College Fr David Brimson OSA, the new hall is a AUS$4.2 million (US$2.0 million) project that will provide students with a much-needed hall for assemblies and Masses. It will also house the college library, to be known as the Augustinian Resource Centre and to have the latest multimedia hardware and software. As well, its first-class facilities will provide for indoor sports, drama productions and musicals. The Brimson Centre will be blessed and officially opened on St Augustine's feast day, 28th August 2003
A member of the "eighty-something" generation, Father David is presently being very active in his retirement in southern Brisbane, Queensland. He recently completed his memoirs, entitled A Brim-full of Memories, which the Australian Augustinian Province is publishing privately.
Now in retirement at Nazareth House, Brisbane, David Brimson has looked back over his long experience of ministry and given us this interesting story in 56 pages, supported by numerous photographs. Cost is $14 incl. postage in Australia. Order from Augustinian Press, P.O. Box 679, Brookvale NSW 2100 (osaadmin@onaustralia.com.au) On 28th August 2003, the newest building at St Augustine's College in Brookvale, New South Wales will be blessed and named the Brimson Centre in his memory. Because he is unable to make the journey to attend the ceremony, he has been videotaped saying a prayer of blessing that will be used at the official dedication ceremony. When the video crew arrived to videotape him at Nazareth House, where Fr David lives in retirement, the rumour spread that he must receiving a knighthood. In the history of St Augustine's College, of which he first opened the doors in 1956, he is a gallant knight!
Over three consecutive Sundays, seventy children from St Thomas's School and local State Schools will receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion for the first time during the Sunday 10 am Mass in St Thomas's Church. The first ceremony is on Sunday 20 July, the second on Sunday 27 July and the third ceremony on Sunday 4 August. Please pray that these children will continue to grow in their faith.
The Augustinians have a long and rich association with the Diocese of Cairns. It began with the arrival of Fr John Hutchinson O.S.A. and his two companions at Cooktown in 1884. Subsequently, the Augustinian presence extended to all the existing mainland parishes of the Diocese. Today, however, the Parishes of Mareeba and Dimbulah are the only parishes in the Diocese, which are still served by the Augustinians. With this background, St Thomas's Priory, Mareeba is now offering an opportunity for single men to experience a period of simple community life in the Augustinian tradition with time for prayer, parish work, recreation and personal pursuits.
