AUGUSTINIAN BULLETIN BOARD - February 2004

The Inner Teacher

Here is a Master within Who teaches us. Christ is our Master, and His inspiration teaches us. Where His inspiration and His unction are lacking, it is in vain that words resound in our ears. As Paul the Apostle said: "I planted the seed and Apollos watered it, but God made it grow."

Therefore, whether we plant or whether we water by our words, we are nothing. It is God Who gives the increase; His anointing teaches you all things.

Sermon on 1 John 3, 13

  • Congratulations to Fr Abel van der Veer osa who celebrates the 40th Anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood (22nd February, 1964, Rome). The anniversary will be celebrated at the 9.30 am Sunday parish Mass on 22nd February at St Kieran's, Manly Vale.

  • LECCETO COMMUNITY 2004
The Augustinians annually invite young people to come together and form a community based around the ideals and the Rule of Life established by St Augustine in the fourth / fifth century. These values are timeless in their application and are good for men and women who want to come together in mutual respect to spend time with others intent upon their God and seeking unity of heart and mind. The community caters for people in the workplace and for those who are taking time off from work for fulltime studies. Using common funds and setting time aside in busy lives for prayer, contemplation and service the community nurtures each other and challenges each one as to their ability to be there for others and for God. Please contact Fr Tony Banks osa who will guide the community in 2004. You will also be supported by the Augustinian sisters and brothers in the Brookvale area. Fr Tony is available on

AUSTRALIAN PILGRIMS VISIT SAN GIMIGNANO

Numerous Australians who are associated with the Augustinians are coming to have a first-hand appreciation of an ancient Augustinian monastery at San Gimignano in Italy that in recent years has become a destination for Augustinian pilgrimage groups from Australia.

Literally built into the thirteenth-century stone wall surrounding the town of San Gimignano in the Tuscany region of Italy, the Augustinian monastery was a few years ago declared an international house of Augustinian pilgrimage and prayer, and Australian Augustinian groups have frequently been among its appreciative visitors.

Fr Michael Morahan O.S.A., Rector of Villanova College in Brisbane, has led a number of both student groups and adult groups there in recent years, and has two separate adult and student group pilgrimages to San Gimignano planned for 2004. The former group will additionally be promoted in Sydney by the Augustinian Spirituality Centre at Greystanes.

Towards the end of September 2003, Father Peter Jones O.S.A. led a pilgrimage group of people associated with St Kieran's Parish (Manly Vale) and St Augustine's College (Brookvale) to San Gimignano.

The monastery itself began in the year 1280, and was added to over the centuries. It boasts the world's best-known frescos on the life of Saint Augustine, which were the work of the artist Benozzo Gozzoli in the year 1465.

The Augustinian Prior of San Gimignano is U.S.-born Fr Brian Lowery O.S.A., who gave talks on Augustine in the Augustinian parishes of Manly Vale (N.S.W.) and Coorparoo (Qld) when visiting Australia last September. You may read Fr Brian's talk by visiting the page of our website http://www.augustinians.org.au/tradition/spirit.html

Five web pages on San Gimignano appear on the web site http://www.augnet.org To reach these pages, click through the following four levels: 1. Order of St Augustine. 2. O.S.A. History 3. O.S.A. Places. 4. Places in Europe No.4.

AUGUSTINIAN COMMUNITY, MAREEBA

The Augustinians have a long and rich association with the Diocese of Cairns. It began with the arrival of Fr John Hutchinson O.S.A. and his two companions at Cooktown in 1884.

Subsequently, the Augustinian presence extended to all the existing mainland parishes of the Diocese. Today, however, the Parishes of Mareeba and Dimbulah are the only parishes in the Diocese, which are still served by the Augustinians.

With this background, St Thomas's Priory, Mareeba is now offering an opportunity for single men to experience a period of simple community life in the Augustinian tradition with time for prayer, parish work, recreation and personal pursuits.
