AUGUSTINIAN BULLETIN BOARD - April 2004

Jesus carried our sins

In order to be the mediator between God and humanity Jesus took on something from the unjust and the mortals, retaining something with the just one and the immortal one. With the just and immortal one, you see, he retained justice; from the unjust and the mortals he took on mortality, and thus became the reconciler in the middle, throwing down the wall of our sins; which is why his people sing to him And in my God I will leap over the wall. In this way he gave back to God what sins had alienated from him, he brought back with his blood what the devil had taken possession of. He died for us, and he rose again for us.

  • NEWS FROM MANLY VALE AND BALGOWLAH PARISHES

The Role of the Assembly of St Kieran and St Cecilia.

Seven prominent liturgists from the Sydney area came together recently to conduct a number of workshops for liturgical ministers from the Catholic community of St Kieran and St Cecilia. The pastors of this community are the Augustinians resident at ManlyVale.

Two hundred and seventeen people came to hear the keynote address on "the Role of the Assembly at Mass" delivered by Dr Gerard Moore sm. Fr Moore is a member of the National Liturgical Commission.

After morning tea, most of the participants took part in a workshop. These all were directed to answering the question "How might this ministry assist the assembly in its role?" Workshops assisted those in ministry: of Children's Liturgy of the Word; of Ritual Song; of Hospitality, of the Eucharistic Table and of Reading God's Word.

  • LECCETO COMMUNITY 2004
The Augustinians annually invite young people to come together and form a community based around the ideals and the Rule of Life established by St Augustine in the fourth / fifth century. These values are timeless in their application and are good for men and women who want to come together in mutual respect to spend time with others intent upon their God and seeking unity of heart and mind. The community caters for people in the workplace and for those who are taking time off from work for fulltime studies. Using common funds and setting time aside in busy lives for prayer, contemplation and service the community nurtures each other and challenges each one as to their ability to be there for others and for God. Please contact Fr Tony Banks osa who will guide the community in 2004. You will also be supported by the Augustinian sisters and brothers in the Brookvale area. Fr Tony is available on

AUGUSTINIAN COMMUNITY, MAREEBA

The Augustinians have a long and rich association with the Diocese of Cairns. It began with the arrival of Fr John Hutchinson O.S.A. and his two companions at Cooktown in 1884.

Subsequently, the Augustinian presence extended to all the existing mainland parishes of the Diocese. Today, however, the Parishes of Mareeba and Dimbulah are the only parishes in the Diocese, which are still served by the Augustinians.

With this background, St Thomas's Priory, Mareeba is now offering an opportunity for single men to experience a period of simple community life in the Augustinian tradition with time for prayer, parish work, recreation and personal pursuits.
