AUGUSTINIAN BULLETIN BOARD - September 2004

Inwardly, where nobody can see us we are all hearers

You are hearers of the word, we its preachers, Inwardly though, where nobody can see us, we are all hearers; inwardly in the heart, in the mind, where he is teaching you, who prompts you to applaud. I, you see, am speaking outwardly, he is arousing you inwardly. So we are all hearers inwardly, and all of us, both outwardly and inwardly in the sight of God, ought to be doers.

Sermon 179, 7

The Intermediate Provincial Chapter of the Australian Province took place at Anderley Lodge, North Sydney from 11 to 16 July. The Prior General attended as President and the Province was assisted by Mr Ross Keane as Facilitator of the Mid-Chapter. Ross had worked extensively with the Provincial Council and a pre-Chapter Steering Committee over the preceding year in preparation. This had involved a special assembly, individual reflection, community and regional meetings as well as special commissions. The Mid-Chapter itself was an assembly of the Province.

A challenge for the Mid-Chapter was the awareness that with a diminution and ageing in the Province's personnel we could no longer maintain a number of ministry commitments we presently have. Together with this was the determination to continue to be a positive, enthusiastic and engaging presence in our service of the Australian church.

For the benefit of our website readers is a summary of the decisions (and/or their consequences) of the Mid-Chapter:-

In the period 2004 to 2006 the Province maintains the parish ministries in Coorparoo, Manly Vale, Mareeba, South Yarra and St Clair .

The Province confirms its withdrawal from Goodna/Springfield at the end of 2004.

The Province will withdraw from the parishes of Echuca and Kyabram. (The timing of the withdrawals from these two parishes in Northern Victoria has yet to be determined).

In the longer term (after 2006) the three parish bases that the Province commits itself to maintaining are Coorparoo, Manly Vale and St Clair.

The Province supports the exploration with a view to implementation of the development of a program of Augustinian volunteers which will include a significant social justice component.

The Province supports the establishment of a proactive coordination of justice and peace activities in the Province.

LECCETO COMMUNITY 2004

The Augustinians annually invite young people to come together and form a community based around the ideals and the Rule of Life established by St Augustine in the fourth / fifth century. These values are timeless in their application and are good for men and women who want to come together in mutual respect to spend time with others intent upon their God and seeking unity of heart and mind. The community caters for people in the workplace and for those who are taking time off from work for fulltime studies. Using common funds and setting time aside in busy lives for prayer, contemplation and service the community nurtures each other and challenges each one as to their ability to be there for others and for God. Please contact Fr Tony Banks osa who will guide the community in 2004. You will also be supported by the Augustinian sisters and brothers in the Brookvale area. Fr Tony is available on

AUGUSTINIAN COMMUNITY, MAREEBA

The Augustinians have a long and rich association with the Diocese of Cairns. It began with the arrival of Fr John Hutchinson O.S.A. and his two companions at Cooktown in 1884.

Subsequently, the Augustinian presence extended to all the existing mainland parishes of the Diocese. Today, however, the Parishes of Mareeba and Dimbulah are the only parishes in the Diocese, which are still served by the Augustinians.

With this background, St Thomas's Priory, Mareeba is now offering an opportunity for single men to experience a period of simple community life in the Augustinian tradition with time for prayer, parish work, recreation and personal pursuits.
